FDA Launches Women’s Health Video Blog

February 4, 2011 Leave a comment Go to comments

Today, FDA launched a new video blog that will focus on women’s health issues. The videos for this blog can be found here on the Transparency blog and on the FDA YouTube channel.

February 4th is National Wear Red Day which means women across the country will be wearing red to help raise awareness of women’s heart disease. Nearly 43 million women, one-third of all women in America, are living with or are at risk for heart disease.  By some estimates that number could rise significantly by 2030.  Heart disease is also the leading cause of death among women, claiming more lives than chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and lung cancer combined.

This video is part of our department’s The Heart Truth campaign, which gives women a wakeup call about the risks of heart disease but also supports them as they manage and avoid those risks.  The campaign asks women to talk to their doctor, find out their risk, and take action today to lower it.

Please watch our video blog and let us know what you think in the comment area below so we can continue to improve these videos and better address your needs.

You can also find more women’s heart health information and materials at www.fda.gov/womenshearthealth.

Found this site while surfing. If a video blog caught the FDA’s imagination in 2011. should 2013 be the year of social media.

Crucial information for women. Pointing out the differences in the way men and women experience cardiac symptoms is so very important. Nice, easy interaction between the two presenters.

Well done presentation. The conversational tone was excellent. Particularly enjoyed the casual, but clear clarifications about the different symptoms that present in women vs men. I’d like to see more presentations in this format.

Excellent presentation. Women’s heart health is important because so many women are not aware of the warning signs of heart problems. Crucial information and presented in a way that is easily understood. Great job!!

Thoughtful and caring for all women, but still coming off very professional. Go Lesley!

  14. February 8, 2011 at 8:26 pm

The risk of heart disease in women have increased over the years. Different campaigns such as videos like this could definitely help spread awareness to women not only here in our country but also across the globe.Good job to you guys from FDA!

  15. February 16, 2011 at 2:49 am

I agree with Kirsten. Heart disease has many symptoms.. In fact we call it the silent killer.. Public health and awareness can reduce mortality rates caused by heart disease but ultimately the patient has to make a choice and be active and NOT passive about his or her health and take action..

I would like to see more videos come out about this topic of heart disease. More people need to be aware of the impact of and who is affected by heart disease. I think videos along with blogs like this will catch more peoples attention because a video was included. Thank you for sharing and keep up the good work.

  22. March 13, 2011 at 8:38 pm

A very excellent presentation. Yes, it is a fact that many people don’t know that heart disease is a very big concern for women too! I’m glad that the FDA is letting women know that they are at risk and some of symptoms of what they might experience in an emergency situation. If you have any of these symptoms – DON’T WAIT, GET HELP!

  23. March 13, 2011 at 10:27 pm

  26. March 22, 2011 at 5:37 am

Outside of congenital heart defects that people are born with, heart disease typically is a lifestyle disease. Trans fats, greasy foods, little or no fruits, little or no veggies, water substitutes, low fiber and no exercise, only adds fuel to the fire.

  27. April 1, 2011 at 10:25 pm

I am always happy to see discussions about women’s health issues and these 2 women had a very friendly manner that was easy to follow while they were giving some very pertinent information about heart disease in women, which is seriously underreported.
I am happy to see the FDA stepping up with this kind of information and I found this entire site to be very informative and videos are a great tool.

What a great effort by the FDA to dedicate an easily-accessible blog solely to women’s issues. Heart health in women is a critical topic and it’s assuring to see it presented in this manner. In upcoming video blogs it would be nice to see some misconceptions about heart disease in women, the truth about mammograms and when women who are not predisposed to cancer should start getting them, as well as ways to incorporate exercise and affordable healthy eating into busy lives. A recent study by the University of Minnesota shows that new mothers were unable to eat as many vegetables or work out as often as new fathers. It would be great to have the FDA’s advice on this problem available in blog form. Thank you again for the great idea, looking forward to future blog posts.

  29. April 12, 2011 at 11:40 am

Good news. I always thought breast cancer was #1 cause of death among women…Looks like I need more knowledge. I hopethe blog will provide valuable rheumatoid arthritis information for patients.

  30. April 14, 2011 at 6:49 am

Kudos for sharing this informative video. It helps a lot to widen such ideas like this.

  31. April 15, 2011 at 1:44 am

Thanks for this very informative post. I have a lot of thoughts regarding on breast cancer, my aunt died because of this cancer. But now I have read your blog, I gathered lots of information.

  32. April 15, 2011 at 12:16 pm

I’ve really learned lots of great new stuff regarding the importance of our heart as an individual. We should be aware of it and this site will be our light upon the shadows.

  33. April 17, 2011 at 2:41 pm

Will the blog cover diabetes and the problem of high glucose in the blood? I’m sure many women need that.

  34. April 24, 2011 at 2:29 pm

I’m joining Miranda’s request. Unfortunately, blood glucose level problem spreads at frightening speed and getting more educated prevents many problems.

  35. April 28, 2011 at 10:22 pm

This is a wonderful step in the right direction. The video was very informative on heart disease. We need to be proactive about our health and bring down mortality rates

  37. May 16, 2011 at 6:00 am

Women across the world need to be aware of how susceptible they are to diseases. This blog will help more women to know what they have to do to avoid any kind of health problems.
    Great work!

  38. May 22, 2011 at 12:11 pm

Thank you for enlightening women about this issue. Furthermore, controlling the risk factors for heart disease is just as important in women as in men. And if you are a woman, you have a few additional things to think about as you plan your risk reduction strategy.

  39. May 27, 2011 at 4:05 pm

This is great news. We DO need to get more educated, especially now that we a ready to do just anything and hace just any surgery only to look attractive. You know what I mean.

  40. May 28, 2011 at 3:50 am

I agree with @anonymous _ this is a step in the right direction. While using social media to get the message out is no secret, it’s good that the FDA did this, because a lot of women are uniformed about issues like breat cancer and the like!

  41. June 23, 2011 at 6:42 pm

Thanks for these efforts. Online health sources helped my wife save her breasts and combat cancer. Her aunt didn’t have access to such information sources and it’s 20 years now that she’s gone. I believe this blog will save thousands of lives.

  45. July 7, 2011 at 4:22 am

I didn’t realise how much heart disease can affect women! I also think the use of video blogging is very useful as it aims to a younger audience who need to be aware of it!

  46. July 7, 2011 at 3:29 pm

“February 4th is National Wear Red Day which means women across the country will be wearing red to help raise awareness of women’s heart disease. Heart disease is also the leading cause of death among women, claiming more lives than chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and lung cancer combined.” What strikes me is the prevalence is so high! Everyone always talks about breast cancer and wears the pink ribbons, but it’s not even the leading cause of death in women! We need to raise awareness of this so that women can stay healthy!! Thank you.

  47. July 8, 2011 at 10:05 pm

Many thanks for this great info. I’m sure people would benefit from this health blog.

  48. July 12, 2011 at 4:42 pm

I wish more women would pay attention to these types of things! its so important to our health.

  49. July 13, 2011 at 11:34 am

Thank you for this insightful video, heart disease can definitely kill you while you sleep. A large-scale campaign should be staged in order to inform the masses about this. But as always, one should exercise and stay healthy.

  50. July 23, 2011 at 5:02 pm

Eat Healthy food and exercise more to reduce the chance of heart disease and most importantly stop smoking and stop drinking too much alcohol. problem slove

  51. July 23, 2011 at 8:41 pm

As a Hypnotherapist I am able to offer considerable assistance to typical lifestyle factors that contribute to the disease. Stress reduction, diet, exercise, smoking. Amplification of positive motivation to accomplish these goals can be relatively simple for many. It amazes me that with the rising healthcare cost crisis, more utilization of this modality is not a focus. This is despite medical and psychological study after study, (many available on my website), that demonstrate the efficacy of hypnotherapy, even in it’s simplest experimental clinical application. hypnohotshot.

This is a great addition for the FDA and with information about this topic it will certainly help womens health issues be highlighted and save lives for sure. Really enjoyed the post. Thanks

  61. August 19, 2011 at 10:21 am

It is good to see the FDA putting the effort into womens issues. I wonder if they are going to do anything about the many problems associated with men?

  62. August 20, 2011 at 7:17 pm

Very nice to see awareness like this. My husband and I decided to get serious after our first child so we jumped on what my mom thinks is a crazy diet. We just want to stay lean and eat heart/brain healthy foods and be a true model to our boy.

Our biggest goal is to grow our own food so we can follow a special diet we’ve been on to keep us on track. We’d love to get into aquaponics but until I can find a method that will run it without power, old fashioned gardening will have to do!

What a great resource. It’s certainly an important concern to those of us in the Sandwich Generation, juggling the issues of caring for elderly parents while raising our children or babysitting our grandchildren! If we get sick, there’s REALLY a problem for everyone. :) I’ll have to bookmark this for next February. Thank you.

Thanks for your very informative video. As you mentioned women are more likely than men to have heart attack symptoms unrelated to chest pain. You stated neck, shoulder, upper back or abdominal discomfort and fatigue. Also, shortness of breath, nausea or vomiting, sweating, lightheadedness or dizziness are symptoms women should be aware of. These symptoms are more subtle than the obvious severe chest pain often associated with heart attacks for men.

This video contains valuable information, did not know what the situation was so serious. it is better to write an informative video to text. It is the best method to convey this information. I wonder with this program will include information about herpes. I am most interested herpes. The WHO estimates that 85% of the worlds population is infected with the herpes simplex virus, although it often lies dormant in the body. Medical researchers have said that even if they find a cure that can remove the virus from the body, it is likely that you would be reinfected with it because it is so widespread. Therefore I am more interested in initiatives that seek a way to prevent outbreaks than those looking for a cure.

It’s nice to see someone (FDA) stepping up on this issue of women’s heart disease. I can only wonder how many million women had heart attacks, went to their local ER, were mis-diagnosed and suffered consequences. The female heart attack symptoms have been long known but mostly ignored by the medical community at large. I am a Huntsville AL Chiropractor, Madison AL Chiropractor, Decatur AL Chiropractor, I practice at Millar Chiropractic. on my local TV show on the ABC affiliate WAAY TV, we have had women cardiologist on talking about this very subject. I am proud of you for getting the word out on this essential problem. Please tell all your friend to watch this important video.

Perhaps this information will wake women up to dangers of a poor diet and lack of exercise. Trouble is they have usually been too busy dealing with family demands and juggling work with home. This should be a wake up call to them to become a little more selfish and look after themselves more.

Not only heart diseases are the major causes of death among women, cancer is also one of the main causes among them. Apart from them diabetes, influenza, pneumonia, and respiratory diseases are also some other reasons.

It’s honestly painful to think the number 43 million – and to think about why these numbers could be so high. We have the greatest amount of processed foods, sugars, and preservatives circulating in our national food supply than at any other time in history. There are as many dangers as there are choices. Our genetic predispositions, diets, indoor environments, and frequency of exercise help to determine overall risk probability. Reducing this risk via proper motivation, dedication, time (and money) is the key. Unfortunately those who have less of it tend to have less of all the former. If on a budget, keep in mind that less is more (energetic nutrition vs. nutritionally deficient “filler”). You can eat less and stay heart-healthy:)

As others have pointed out, heart disease is a lifestyle disease- it a result of unhealthy eating over a period of time. But the good news is that you can rectify this by changing your eating habits. As an example, most people would prefer to pick up a packet of ground beef rather than a turnip of some quinoa right? A predominantly animal based diet which is low on fiber, low on vitamins & minerals and high in toxins is what ultimately leads to heart disease.

We need to bring in fruits, veggies, grains, herbs, spices, nuts and beans into our diets in a major way and cut down on the meats and cheese. Check out A Daily Apple (www.adailyapple.com) that brings you information on numerous healthy foods and how to incorporate it into your diet with healthy recipes and cooking videos. Look for more such information on the web and it can greatly impact the fight against heart disease.

it’s great to see this initiative. Having only found out recently that I have high blood pressure, I’ve only just found out that it’s called the silent killer because there are not really any symptoms for this disease. So many people can suffer from high blood pressure and not even know it unless they go to the doctor and get checked out. I can think of many things I would rather be doing than coping with a stroke just because I didn’t get myself checked out at the doctors.

It would be great if at the end they could just mention what the next health topic is going to be, help to develop a level of interest and anticipation in future video blogs. And in additional to the video blog you could offer the transcripts as some people take in information best when they have something in front of them to read.

    Hi There Fdatransparencyblog,
Speaking of which, Maintaining good health is important for women as they have to do many activities in the daily life. Lots of women have been suffering from many types of Womens Health related problems due to the lack of essential vitamins and minerals in the body. Vitamins are very important and essential ingredients for the body because the help the body organs function properly and due to this reason they need to keep themselves in a good health. Good quality vitamins help the women in slowing ageing process, strengthen the immune system, improve the energy levels and also support the hormones. But before looking for vitamins, a medical consultation is very essential as the medical professional will be able too find out the most suitable vitamins as per the body formation and functionality of vital organs.
    Regards

I wonder with this program will include information about herpes. I am most interested herpes. The WHO estimates that 85% of the worlds population is infected with the herpes simplex virus, although it often lies dormant in the body. Medical researchers have said that even if they find a cure that can remove the virus from the body, it is likely that you would be reinfected with it because it is so widespread. Therefore I am more interested in initiatives that seek a way to prevent outbreaks than those looking for a cure.

Heart disease in woman, and also in men for that matter, can be greatly prevented or alleviated through the use of alternative medicine methods, in my opinion. Both Yoga and Qi Gong can be invaluable aids in helping the body to heal itself. Combine that with a healthy, and preferably, vegetarian diet, and the chances of surviving many years after a heart attack improve greatly.

My father became a vegetarian after his first heart attack, and his cholesterol levels fell radically without any need for drugs. I am sure that the same can be true for women too.

Of course, the best thing is to ensure one has proper diet and healthy exercise BEFORE heart disease manifests. That is the challenge for women today, especially in the many roles they must carry out. Yoga is something that can be done at home. This is a major advantage in a busy life.

Obesity is a major issue here in South Texas. I know many find bariatric surgery an elective procedure but the effects of a gastric bypass can change people and allow for healthier habits even a return to regular fitness. I don’t agree with the procedures for teenagers. When I was growing up partying was part of life but as a bariatric patient and someone that might still be growing the idea is poorly thought out.

After watching my mother go through a bad heart attack and open heart surgery a few years ago I decided it was time to get myself in shape also. A friend of mine gave me the p90x routine and showed me a little bit about juicing. I have now lost 60 pounds and I am still working out 6 days a week. The exercise has been the real motivator but I also learned that a lot of things I dont like to eat taste so great when I juice them. Heres to heart health ladies.

It’s unfortunate in this day and age that so many people are ignorant of the fact that heart disease is the number one killer of women. It always seems to be associated with men. The problem is that the risk of heart disease can be increased significantly when other illnesses and diseases are present as mention with Diabetes, lung disease and the like.

I have compiled quite a bit of information on diabetes that I would like to submit for your perusal and input, hopefully you will find it as beneficial as your information.

The funny thing is that following a healthy diet, living well and getting exercise not only helps those with Diabetes but those at risk of heart disease get the same benefits.

This is wonderful. It is important for people to understand that the symptoms of heart disease and heart attack are very different for women. The numbers are also on the rise. Education will help to save lives and prevent heart disease for women. I think including healthy eating tips and other prevention strategies will be very helpful in the videos. Maybe a “heart healthy” cooking demonstration and some healthy exercise demonstrations.

The rampant obesity in the USA is one of the major causes of many health issues, not only heart disease. It should be in everyones interest to reverse the trend. There is just one insight to be put forward: when the caloric intake is more than the caloric output there will be overweight. It is so simply blatant. Why not begin at this front?

Heart disease is important but one of the more overlooked aspects of female health is poor posture. Poor posture not only makes a woman look older (and what woman wants to look older?) but it also contributes to the onset of the symptoms of Osteoporosis because misaligned bone structure endures more stress, which can lead to more breakage. There are multiple studies that prove this. Perhaps the govt should emphasize heart disease AND good posture.

t would be interesting to see the overall overdose rate, intentional or not, with hydrocodone being the ONLY drug in the toxicology report. I would make a scientific guess that you will find benzo’s, muscle relaxers, antipsychotics which all affect the CNS. Dont throw the baby out with the bathwater. Oh and dont forget the hydrocodone with ones favorite alcoholic beverage is quite good at stopping ones will to breathe.

This is such an important issue for the modern woman , lots of working mums are juggling jobs and family commitments and putting themselves under major stress , then to unwind they treat themselves with a drink or two , or three and something comforting to eat. This eventually leads to the inevitable happening , some form of major health problem usually the heart is one of the major organs to succumb to stress and abuse. Women need to be aware of the risks.
