FDA’s Pesticide Program

September 13, 2012 Leave a comment Go to comments

Most people know pesticides protect growing crops from insect consumption, but did you realize pesticides are used on many other types of food, including dairy and shellfish?

The FDA hosted a webinar “FDA’s Pesticide Program”, on Thursday, August 30, 2012 at 2:00 PM ET. The featured speaker was Capt. Young H. Lee, Ph.D, Office of Food Safety liaison to the Pesticide Monitoring Program at FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. This webinar presented FDA’s rules and regulations for pesticide use, and its effect on the consumer.

This program has evolved continuously as evidenced by a number of recently incorporated modifications and initiatives. Included are greater emphasis on imports; increased and more specific targeting of pesticide/commodity combinations by geographic area or country.

Pesticides are need more and more because of cash crops, not rotating crops and cutting down all the trees in the field. A single cash crop that spreads for miles is going to attract large sums of the same bugs. If you plant a variety you won’t get the same level of infestation. If you plant different crops each year that have different insect predators the larvae wont have anything to eat. If you leave some trees the birds will have a place to live and will eat some of the insects.
